Croquet clubs across the North East of the UK, and in particular Middlesbrough, were very sad on learning that John (Fitz) had passed away in October from cancer.
Years ago, John had discovered that some of his ICI friends were members of a Middlesbrough club (then located at Prissick Sports Ground), which he joined in 1999. The club soon moved to Albert Park where John was an active member for over twenty‑two years.
John regularly organised one of two teams that took part in the Croquet North league, as well as serving on the CN committee, regularly putting together its annual pre-season newsletter with entry forms for a whole variety of competitions.
Auckland CC appreciated John’s help in securing their move to Chilton (near Ferryhill) after their lawn at Henknowle in Bishop Auckland became unavailable..
John was also keen on carpet croquet playing in Norton in the ‘off season’ and away at Cober Hill (near Scarborough) in late autumn.
